The cemetery was one of the first formally landscaped places in the city, and it is the only example in Texas of a Victorian garden cemetery, a rural, parklike type of burial ground that became popular in 19th-century America. Glenwood’s lush grounds are the resting place of scores of influential Houstonians including billionaire Howard Hughes, movie star Gene Tierney, Astrodome builder Roy Hofheinz and publisher and stateswoman Oveta Culp Hobby.
